Effective weight loss program: Weight training vs. Cardio?
Posted by adminI am a 24 year old male, 5'10 tall, 205 lbs heavy.. looking to lose around 20 lbs.. what is the most ideal way to go about doing it? the traditional 5-6 days of weight training or 3-5 days of intense cardio (45-75 mins per session) from activities like aerobics and resistance spinning? Please help
Well if your looking to lose weight I would combine a program of both resistance training and cardio. Resistance training will help reduce muscle loss when your losing weight. During the first 30 minutes of exercise what your body is using are quick stored energy that it has from foods it ate recently. Afterwards then it begins to metabolizing the fat on your body and this is where cardio comes in. It burns a superior amount of calories compared to weight training.

You need BOTH for weight loss.
I have a coworker who was paired up with a personal trainer on an eating plan and cardio/weights to lose 30 pounds…she thought if she did more cardio she'd lose faster. But her weight loss STOPPED. The trainer was puzzled…she gave in…he explained she needed BOTH. She cut back on the cardio and she kept losing.

you only want to loose 20 lbs? sounds like you need to loose more than that, you should do strength/cardio training three times a week and straight cardio the other four days a week, or vise verse, but strength/cardio is the way to go!

I would recommend a combination of both, plus some flexibility training (stretches). You need to do all 3 to get an effective workout. Strength training, cardio and flexibility training all feed off each other: Strength training builds muscle but doesn't burn fat alone. Cardio burns fat but does not build as much muscle (but the muscle built will burn more calories during cardio). Flexibility give you improved range of motion for all of these activities. I suggest circuit training, which encompasses all of this - and will probably take less time.
Don't forget to improve your eating habits too - try decreasing your carb intake and increasing protein.
Good luck! You men usually have an easier time getting in shape than we women!

intense cardio will cause you to lose all the weight you want to. do 6 days a week, resting one day per week, alternating between super intense cardio and something not as intense like walking or light lifting. you dont want to do too much that you are too sore/tired to do your heavy work out days.
weight lifting does not burn much calories at all, its almost the same as if you were just standing there. it just causes you to gain more muscle mass, which in turn needs more energy to fuel, meaning your caloric intake needs to go up to maintain those muscles. however, you maintain the same diet through out, then your body will have to go to fat reserves to fuel the muscles, resulting in fat loss. you might now lose much weight however, because you are gaining muscle mass. but who said looking ripped was bad?
